Scopa is Italy's classic card game, played here one on one with a 40-card deck. The idea is simple: on your turn you play a card from your hand and capture table cards either of equal value or in a set that adds up to it — and any capture that clears the whole table is a "scopa", worth a bonus point.

Scopa in a nutshell

Played with 40 cards in four suits (denari, coppe, spade, bastoni), one on one. Each player gets 3 cards and 4 cards lie face up on the table. On your turn you play a card: you capture a table card of equal value, or a set of table cards whose values add up to it; otherwise your card stays on the table. When hands run out each player draws 3 more until all 36 dealt cards are played, then the round is scored: +1 for more cards, +1 for more denari (coins), +1 for the settebello, +1 per scopa — most points wins.

Round points at a glance

A round is scored over four categories, one point each:

CategoryWho gets itValue
Cards (carte)The player who captured more cards1 point
Denari (coins)The player who captured more coin cards1 point
SettebelloWhoever captures the 7 of coins1 point
ScopaCapturing every card on the table at once1 point per sweep

At the end of the round the remaining table cards go to the player who made the last capture, without counting as a scopa. The higher score wins the round; equal scores end in a draw.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards are used in Scopa?

40 cards — four suits (denari, coppe, spade, bastoni), each ranked 1 through 10.

How many players play Scopa?

Here it is played one on one: you against a human opponent, or against an AI opponent that joins within seconds.

What is a "scopa"?

Capturing every card on the table with a single play — a sweep, worth one bonus point each. Clearing the table with the round's last card is the exception and does not count.

What is the "settebello"?

The 7 of the coin suit (denari). Whoever captures it scores a full point.

How is a Scopa round won?

One point for more cards, one for more denari, one for the settebello, plus one per scopa. The higher total wins; a tie is a draw.

Must I take a matching card instead of a bigger sum?

Yes — if a table card matches your card's value, you must take that card alone and cannot substitute a larger sum.

What happens to the leftover table cards?

They are added to the pile of the player who made the last capture, without counting as a scopa.

How much time do I get per turn?

20 seconds per turn; if the timer runs out, a legal card is played automatically so the table never stalls.
